Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) commissioner G Srijana said that people's participation is vital for the civic body to bag a good rank in Swachh Survekshan - 2020.
The commissioner visited Srivalli Nagar Colony in Zone I of the city on Friday. Speaking on the occassion, Srijana asked residents of the city to shun single-use plastic items to make Vizag a plastic-free city. "Garbage sorting should be done under three different components-dry, wet and hazardous waste before it is handed over to the sanitary staff of the GVMC," said Srijana to the residents.
Srijana took note of home composting carried out by residents of the colony and appreciated their move to use the same manure for cultivating vegetables and fruits.
The commissioner distributed dustbins and cloth bags to residents. Srijana also asked residents to provide feedback on seven questions relating to the condition of public/community toilets, cleanliness of public/commercial areas, waste segregation and awareness of Swachh Survekshan - 2020.
The residents brought forward civic issues, such as pig menace and lack of street lights, to the notice of the commissioner. They also requested for a park and clearing the silt in a nearby storm water drain in a written representation to the commissioner.
Srijana asked the concerned officials to address the issues raised by residents.
Zone-I commissioner B Ramu, Assistant Medical Officer Dr B Jayaram and others accompanied the commissioner on the visit.
